Dr. Robert H. Sues is President and Chief Executive Officer of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA). ARA is an employee-owned applied science and engineering company, with over 1500 employee owners, that has provided research, engineering, and technical support services to government and commercial clients for more than 40 years.

Dr. Sues joined ARA in 1986 and was named President in 2004 and CEO in 2005. During his tenure, ARA has grown from a small business to a major contributor of advanced technology services and products, including transition of advanced technological concepts to operational software and hardware products. Prior to becoming President & CEO, he served at ARA as Senior Engineer, Project Manager, Division Manager, Sector Manager, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and Executive Vice President for the company. In his role as Executive Vice President, he was responsible for strategic planning, strategic plan execution, and corporate business processes. In his earlier positions as Senior Vice President and Sector Manager, Dr. Sues oversaw the operations of several offices and divisions, including project management, new business development, personnel, and finance. Before joining ARA, he worked for NTS/Structural Mechanics Associates, Inc. as a project manager and senior engineer.

With 40 years’ experience managing and conducting research, development, testing, and systems engineering programs, Dr. Sues is a recognized technical expert in probabilistic mechanics, advanced software systems for battlespace decision support, and weapons effects. During his career he has executed these activities for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and the National Science Foundation, among others. Dr. Sues has also authored or co-authored more than 100 journal articles, conference proceedings, and reports, and contributed to several conventional and nuclear weapons effects manuals.

Dr. Sues is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of California and North Carolina. Dr. Sues is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Defense Industrial Association and serves on the Board’s Finance Committee. He recently completed two years of service as co-chair of the Department of Commerce, Emerging Technology Technical Advisory Committee. He also is past Secretary and Treasurer of his local community civic association and currently serves as the association’s Transportation Committee Chair.
