Mr. John Bonsell
Senior Vice President, Government Affairs , SAIC
John recently returned to SAIC as the new SVP for Government Affairs. He worked for the company once before as a consultant from 2007 to 2012 and then again as Vice President for Government Affairs from 2015 to 2018.
Prior to this new roll he served as the Majority Staff Director for the Senate Armed Services Committee. In this position, he managed the confirmation oversight responsibilities of the committee which primarily focused on the Department of Defense and other related security functions of the government. He was also responsible for the passage of the annual National Defense Authorization Act which is known for legislating all reforms, policies, and budget authorizations of the Department of Defense and has recently become the primary authorization vehicle of almost all authorizing legislation.
John has also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Senator Inhofe in 2015, and as Minority Staff Director for the Senate Armed Services Committee from 2013-2015. In this role, John managed the Republican staff of the committee while implementing Senator Inhofe’s agenda and priorities in the national security arena.
From 2012-2013, he served as Senator Inhofe’s Legislative Director. In this role, John was responsible for managing all of the legislative staff which included policy and legislative initiatives across government.
From 2001-2007, John worked as the Military Legislative Assistant for Senator James M. Inhofe. In this role, he advised the Senator about all defense, foreign relations, homeland Security, intelligence, and veterans related matters.
He began his career in public service as an Army ROTC Scholarship student and Distinguished Military Graduate from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with emphasis on International Relations in 1981. He served over 20 years in the United States Army in a variety of command and staff positions to include three company level and one battalion level commands. He served in the pentagon as the Chief of Concepts and Doctrine on the Army Staff and on several Joint Staff Working Groups focused on future warfare concepts. He also represented the Army on DOD Net Assessment studies focused on DOD reform and Future Joint Warfighting Concepts.
