James Forrestal Industry Leadership Award

The James Forrestal Industry Leadership Award is named in honor of James Forrestal, who was Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of Defense. The award serves to honor Secretary Forrestal for his leadership and outspoken advocacy for a robust and responsive defense industrial base during the painful early years of post-WWII demobilization.

The Forrestal Award is bestowed annually on a defense industry executive who best reflects Secretary Forrestal’s vision, leadership and staunch support for a strong industrial base.

The awardee will meet the following criteria:
• U.S. Citizen.
• Strong record of business accomplishments.
• Broad understanding of the vital role the industrial base plays in ensuring the
  nation’s security.
• Keen political instincts.
• A record of actively supporting the defense industrial base and its programs.
• Company must be a current NDIA Corporate Member.

NDIA and its predecessor organizations, ADPA and NSIA, have presented annual awards since 1979 - ADPA presented the Eisenhower Award and NSIA the Forrestal Award. Beginning in 1994, the two annual awards were presented in alternating years. After the merger of ADPA and NSIA, and beginning in 2005, the NDIA Board directed the Eisenhower Award and Medal to be presented annually at the NDIA Annual Award Dinner, and the Defense Industry Leadership Award be renamed the Forrestal Award and Medal, also to be presented annually at a venue selected by the Board. This decision perpetuates the legacies of these two great historical figures and preserves both awards.
