Dr. David A. Schauer is Head of the Radiation Generators Division and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) liaison at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI). He is an internationally recognized expert with more than 40 years of military, government, private sector and nonprofit experience. He is widely published and cited, and often invited to speak at conferences and symposia.
Dr. Schauer served as a technical expert for the White House Office of Science and Technology and Policy, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) committees. He represents DoD on two North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) committees. Dr. Schauer’s Navy assignments included operational, research, teaching, and leadership positions at commands from San Diego, CA to Kittery, ME, with the bulk of his time spent in Bethesda, MD. His final tour was on the faculty of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS).
Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Dr. Schauer served as Executive Director of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP). During his tenure, the Council published more than 40 reports, commentaries, statements, and annual meeting proceedings on a wide range of basic and applied topics with direct impact on federal, state and local regulations, policies and guidelines. He reorganized NCRP’s financial, administrative, publication and executive functions to ensure compliance with the Congressional Charter. Dr.Schauer is now Executive Director Emeritus at NCRP. He also served as Executive Secretary of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU).
