Brigadier General Stephanie Howard serves as the commanding general of the Army Reserve Sustainment Command.  She most recently served on active duty as the acting vice director of the Army staff in the Pentagon.

Brig. Gen. Howard’s military service began in 1994 with her graduation from the United States Military Academy, where she majored in Mathematical Sciences. Upon completion of the Ordnance Officer Basic Course and Explosive Ordnance Disposal School, she served on active duty with the 21st Theater Support Command in Germany. Her active duty assignments included the 20th Ordnance Company (EOD) in Kaiserslautern, two tours in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and commander of the 720th Ordnance Company (EOD) in Mannheim. After an overseas extension, and another assignment in Darmstadt, BG Howard transitioned to the United States Army Reserve. 

In 1999, Brig. Gen. Howard joined the 378th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. When her family moved to Fort Irwin, CA, she joined the Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) program with an assignment at HQ, Army Materiel Command (AMC). Shortly after 9/11, the Army mobilized her and she spent the next two and a half years on active duty in Alexandria, Virginia, working at AMC as an Ammunition Officer.

In 2004, Brig. Gen. Howard transitioned back to a Troop Program Unit (TPU), teaching ROTC at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She spent 2006-07 in Fort Leavenworth, KS, working for the Army Research Institute at the Leader Development Research Unit. In 2007, the Howards made their way back to Germany, and BG Howard taught Intermediate Level Education (ILE) for two years in Grafenwoehr. In 2009, the Howards moved to Charlottesville, Virginia and she began teaching ILE in Fort Lee, VA and ROTC at the University of Virginia. In 2012, she took command of the newly formed 2d Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) Battalion in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, deploying to Afghanistan in October 2013. She left command in December 2014 and facilitated war games at the Center for Strategic Leadership in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Brig. Gen. Howard next commanded 2d Brigade (Transportation), 94th Division (Force Sustainment) at Fort Lee, Virginia from 2016-18. After her brigade command, BG Howard became the Deputy Commander, 451st Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), in Wichita, Kansas. She mobilized again in late 2018 at the Office of the Chief of Army Reserve (OCAR), spending two years on active duty in various positions, culminating as the Assistant Chief of Staff. Upon promotion to General Officer, her first assignment was Deputy Commanding General, 108th Training Command.

Brig. Gen. Howard’s military education includes the Ordnance Officer Basic Course, Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Intermediate Level Education, the Advanced Operational Warfighting Course, and the Army War College. Her military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

She is married to Colonel (retired) Jonathan Howard, currently a member of the Senior Executive Service in the Department of Defense. They reside in Lorton, VA with their high school son, Nathan. Their son Evan and daughter Megan both attend Harvard University.
