Modern warfare has grown to be synonymous with the deployment of asymmetric capabilities to offset technological advantages. In this constantly evolving environment, high-power microwave (HPM) weapons will play a vital role. Potential utilization of HPMs to protect large areas could have substantial implications in the fight against drones and other unmanned systems which have proven to be a significant threat against naval vessels, bases, and other installations reliant on limited defenses. There have also been promising advancements in offensive weapon systems capable of rendering adversarial electronic capabilities ineffective. This presentation will discuss the basics of high-power microwave technology, illustrate the importance of microwave weapons to the Department of Defense (DoD), and provide an overview of ongoing DoD and government activities to develop and deploy HPM technology to the warfighter.
