John Garnaut is founder of Garnaut Global, where he advises select global asset managers, technology companies and allied government agencies. John assists his clients to navigate the opaque world of Chinese elite politics and anticipate China’s actions and impact on the investment landscape.

John leads a team of specialist Chinese language researchers, each of whom is a global leader in studying Military-Civil Fusion, United Front Work and tech-enabled systems of surveillance and control. They mine open-source Chinese language information to map Party organisation, explain ideology, track China’s expanding technology footprint and assist clients to anticipate opportunities and mitigate risks. John also leads foreign interference and espionage risk reviews and enhanced due diligence services for financial institutions.

John was Senior Advisor to Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Principal Advisor (International) at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, where he led the Australian government’s interagency analysis and policy response to Chinese Communist Party interference in Australian politics, business and academia.

Garnaut was previously a financial services lawyer at Hall & Wilcox and Fairfax Media’s China correspondent and Asia-Pacific editor.
