Bio

Captain Greg Zettler, a native of Springfield, VA, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering. Following commissioning he completed naval nuclear power training at Orlando, FL and Charleston, SC.

In December 1995, Captain Zettler reported aboard USS PHOENIX (SSN 702), where he served in a variety of submarine Division Officer roles during PHOENIX's deployment to the North Atlantic and completion of all preparations for decommissioning.

Captain Zettler next served as Communications Officer aboard USS NORFOLK (SSN 714) during a deployment to the Mediterranean, which was highlighted by NORFOLK's participation in combat operations during NOBLE ANVIL/ALLIED FORCE, the NATO operation against Serbian aggression in Kosovo.

In June of 2000, Captain Zettler earned a Master's Degree in Leadership and Human Resource Development from the Naval Postgraduate School and began serving as a Company Officer at the United States Naval Academy. Following his tour at the Naval Academy, he attended the Submarine Officer Advanced Course and was awarded the L. Y. Spear Award as class honor graduate.

Captain Zettler reported aboard USS SCRANTON (SSN 756) as Navigator and Operations Officer in October of 2002. SCRANTON completed a Depot Modernization Period and a deployment to CENTCOM while he was aboard. Transferring ashore, he served on the staff of Commander, United States Fleet Forces Command, Capabilities and Resource Integration Directorate, as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Requirements Officer.

As Executive Officer, Captain Zettler served on USS RHODE ISLAND (SSBN 740) (Blue) and completed four strategic deterrence patrols. Following this tour, he earned a Master's Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, graduating with distinction and also completing the Defense Acquisition University's Senior Acquisition Course, before serving on the Navy Staff as the Deputy Special Assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations for Joint Matters from June 2010 until March 2011.

From November 2011 to October 2014 Captain Zettler served as Commanding Officer of USS NORFOLK (SSN 714). During his tour NORFOLK completed two deployments to EUCOM, CENTCOM and AFRICOM, and earned the 2013 COMSUBRON SIX Battle Efficiency "E". Captain Zettler was also COMSUBLANT's nominee for the 2014 VADM James Bond Stockdale Award for Inspirational Leadership.

From October 2014 to February 2016, Captain Zettler served on the staff of Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic as the Senior Member of the Tactical Readiness Evaluation Team. From March of 2016 until June of 2018 he served as the Director of Test and Evaluation in the Undersea Weapons Program Office (PMS404), under Program Executive Office, Submarines.

Captain Zettler is most proud to have served with teams that earned a Navy Unit Commendation, three Meritorious Unit Commendations, and four Battle "E" Awards for excellence. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (six awards) and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards). He is married to the former Amy Armitage of Aiken, SC and resides in Herndon, VA.
