Since first being elected to represent the 29th Congressional District of New York in a special election in November 2010, Tom has fought for the people of the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes Region, and Western New York. By focusing on job creation and helping those in our communities including students, senior citizens, and veterans, Team Reed strives to make our region a better place to live and work every day. Our mission is to continue to be accessible and be of assistance to anyone in need.

Tom and his team have completed more than 10,000 constituent cases, resolving issues with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Veterans Administration (VA), Social Security Administration (SSA) and other federal agencies.

Tom values the thoughts, opinions, and concerns of the people from across our region, which is why he has held more than 200 town hall meetings since taking office.

Tom believes that the power of our nation is not in the government we create, but rather the people who work hard every day to raise their families and make their communities better places to live. He believes that we must again become a nation of personal accountability - one where our government does not guarantee success to everyone, but rather simply guarantees that every individual is given the opportunity to succeed.

Tom remains committed to fighting for job creation by tackling our national debt, reducing burdensome regulations on small businesses – our country’s drivers of private-sector job growth – reforming the tax code to make it simpler, fairer, and less costly, bolstering our domestic manufacturing industry and developing an “all-of-the-above” comprehensive energy policy to end our dependence on Middle Eastern crude oil.

Tom fights for these priorities because family means everything to him and he wants to ensure we can continue to call the Finger Lakes, the Southern Tier and Western New York home for generations to come.

Tom currently represents New York’s 23rd District in the House of Representatives. In June 2011, he was appointed to the Committee on Ways and Means, where he currently serves, which is responsible for addressing issues of tax policy, trade, health care, and Social Security. He also sits on the Trade, Tax Policy, and Human Resources subcommittees. He serves as Co-Chair of both the Congressional Diabetes Caucus and the House Manufacturing Caucus, and he is a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus. 

He is the youngest of 12 children raised by Tom Sr. and Betty Barr Reed – both long-term residents of the city of Corning, New York. Tom’s father was a career Army officer, who worked his way through the enlisted ranks, and was a decorated veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. Tom married his wife, Jean, in 1996. Tom, Jean, and their two children, Autumn and Will, currently live in Corning, in the house built by Tom’s grandfather in the early 1920s.

Tom graduated from Alfred University in 1993 and from Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1996. His legal profession began shortly thereafter in Rochester, New York. In 1999, he returned to his hometown of Corning. After opening a private legal practice, Tom spent the next 11 years working in real estate. Concerned about the personal, petty political issues that he saw at City Hall in Corning, he successfully ran for mayor and served as Mayor of Corning from 2008-2009. Tom helped change the political climate in Corning, and is now working to do the same in Washington.
