Digital Manufacturing Working Group
The NDIA Digital Manufacturing Working Group (DMWG) was established in the spring of 2024.
Mission
The Digital Manufacturing Working Group will engage in a continuing dialog with DoD and other elements of the Industry Association Consortium (IAC) to inform Department of Defense strategy development, identify implementation issues affecting manufacturing companies, and explore opportunities for digital technology-enabled improvements in DoD and industry business practices.
Scope
The scope of this Working Group is the use of life cycle digital thread technologies by manufacturing companies to meet DoD needs in defense system acquisition and sustainment. Specific areas of emphasis will include:
- Model-based Enterprise (Definition, Manufacturing, System-Engineering)
- Digital Automation (Digital Thread, Twin and workflows)
- Digital Information Visualization
- AI/ML for Manufacturing Systems
- Supply Network Cybersecurity
- Digital technical data and intellectual property used in manufacturing
Objectives and Deliverables
The DMWG will provide a forum that brings together industry, academia, and the government for the advancement of policy discussions, best practices, and common understandings of how lifecycle digital thread technologies can enable improvements in manufacturing for defense acquisition and sustainment. Deliverables will include:
- Development of lifecycle use case scenarios that can be used to assess the potential impact of DoD strategies, plans, policies and technical standards
- Development and coordination of industry comments requested by DoD on content affecting the DMWG scope
- Industry white papers, as needed, to address implementation issues and recommend actions by government and industry
- Recommendations and inputs to DoD on a rolling basis consistent with the DMWG mission
