Smith-Turner Award for Expeditionary Operations

The Smith-Turner Expeditionary Operations Award recognizes the individual who, in the judgment of the panel, has provided momentous leadership and contributed significant guidance, decisions, and noteworthy actions resulting in improved national expeditionary warfare capability. The achievements for which this award to be considered will align with the mission of the Expeditionary Warfare Division (EWD) to serve as the focal point and coordinating element within NDIA for the identification, study and resolution of expeditionary warfare and force protection issues in the littoral regions of the world impacting on the strength of the national defense industrial base and the armed services. Though not comprehensive, the scope and scale of an individual's lifetime achievement can be considered through the EWD activities in the following committees: industry; amphibious warfare; littoral and mine warfare; expeditionary unmanned vehicles; C4I in the littorals; seabasing and sustainment; and force protection/anti-terrorism.

The award will encompass achievements during the nominee's career and will be presented to the winner at the NDIA Annual Expeditionary Warfare Conference. This Award is open to all individuals, regardless of grade or position, in the United States Expeditionary Warfare community. All military personnel, government civilians, and industry employees are eligible.

History
The Smith-Turner Expeditionary Operations Award is named after two of the foremost practitioners of Expeditionary Warfare during WWII: General Holland M. Smith, USMC, and Admiral Richmond K. Turner, USN.

Purpose
Awarded to individuals who have provided momentous leadership, contributed significant guidance and decisions, and undertaken substantial actions resulting in improved national expeditionary warfare capability.

Criteria
The achievements for which this award to be considered will:

  • Align with the mission of the NDIA Expeditionary Warfare Division and promote the identification, study and resolution of expeditionary warfare and force protection issues in the littoral regions of the world impacting on the strength of the national defense industrial base and the armed services.

  • Have made significant contributions to the elements of successful Expeditionary Warfare in: industry; amphibious warfare; littoral and mine warfare; expeditionary unmanned vehicles; C4I in the littorals; sea basing and sustainment; and force protection/anti-terrorism.

  • Demonstrate significant contributions that led to the strengthening of our national security by developing, procuring, or supporting Expeditionary Warfare Operations or enabling critical technologies or strategic thinking that contribute to the same.

The award is open to all individuals, regardless of grade or position, in the United States Expeditionary Warfare community. All military personnel, government civilians, and industry employees are eligible.
