ARLINGTON, VA – On behalf of the members of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), Michael Bayer, board chair and the Hon. David L. Norquist, NDIA's president and CEO issued the following statement on former Defense Secretary, the Hon. Dr. Ash Carter, who died Monday, October 24, at age 68:

NDIA mourns the passing of Carter, the United States’ 25th Secretary of Defense. Carter demonstrated a relentless devotion to our country, through his service as cabinet secretary, academic leader, and national security thought leader in the private sector. He truly was a great light with so much yet to give to the nation. His untimely passing is an enormous loss to our nation and to our industry.

“Secretary Carter was a staunch advocate for our military and was passionate about ensuring our military personnel had the correct equipment and the best technology.  I saw this firsthand while serving with him on the Defense Science Board. But I also saw his unwavering love for them, including his strong support for all service members to have equal opportunities, while supporting him in his leadership roles in the Pentagon, including as secretary of defense,” Bayer said.

NDIA awarded Carter the 2013 Dwight D. Eisenhower Award at the organization’s Annual Award Dinner.

NDIA offers our sincere condolences to his loving wife Stephanie, his children Ava and Will, friends, and colleagues.
