NDIA joins call on Biden for semiconductor funding

ARLINGTON, VA – The National Defense Industrial Association is among 17 organizations asking President Joe Biden for funds to revitalize semiconductor research and manufacturing in the United States, as asked for in the CHIPS for America Act, the Arlington, Virginia, trade group announces today.
In a Feb. 18 letter to the White House, the organizations said they want the CHIPS (Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors) for America Act funded as part of the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act. They also seek an investment tax credit to help build and modernize more semiconductor manufacturing facilities in this country.
Citing the investments of “the government of our global competitors” to fortify semiconductor manufacturing and research in their countries, NDIA and cosigners fear the United States is falling behind on this technology, which is crucial to many industries, including national defense.
“The absence of U.S. incentives has made our country uncompetitive” in semiconductor production and has cut into America’s share of its global manufacturing, the letter states. Under the CHIPS for America Act, “these initiatives will help grow the U.S. economy, increase jobs in advanced manufacturing, assure the supply of critical components essential to virtually all sectors of the economy, and strengthen our national security.”

NDIA signed the letter with the Advanced Medical Technology Association, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Autos Drive America, CTIA, Global Business Alliance, IPC International, the Information Technology Industry Council, the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, the National Association of Manufacturers, SEMI, Semiconductor Industry Association, Tech CEO Council, TechNet, the Telecommunications Industry Association, the Trusted Supplier Steering Group and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
